Card Protection Hard Sell!

Just phoned to activate my barclaycard (for the freebie £50 voucher) and the guy tried the card protection hard sell. he said that while credit cards are covered for fraudulent use, debit cards aren't so I should have protection for them. Is this correct? I always assumed banks were liable for fraudulent use of an account and so protection was a waste of money. 
Also the guy asked me why I'd applied for the card. is this normal practice? I was abit flummoxed as I only want the voucher then intend to cancel!
