Oh, and back to the OP. As well as money, do make sure adult children play a full part in tackling household chores: shopping, cooking, laundry, vacuuming. It's all part of life's rich tapestry!

...give a third  Third for mother, third to spend and a third to save!
Yep :D:D:D:D sounds very familiar - that's what I ended up paying ... I only got off with that because I was under a promise to put 1/3 into some sort of savings.

If I refused to save, I had the option of paying council tax, food & utilities pro rata on top.

I think this was a fab system because even now, I automatically think to divide my salary into savings, rent & spend before subdividing.

My son is going to earning £25,000 per annum (pro rata) for a couple of months and he is going to pay £32.50 a week. This will drop to £20 when he starts his PHD. He is 22.

Bossyboots, I'm a little surpised that your son only contributes 32.50 pw  on a £25k salary. I personally would never have felt comfortable giving only that much to my mum.

I really think that the only way to get kids (not that old myself! ) to appreciate saving & budgeting is to be honest with them about what it takes to run a house and your expectations of them as part of the household.

  • My nearly 36 b/f is on 30k and pays his parents £100 p/m. No wonder he never left. But this will change......:)
