I've just recontracted with BT for 12 months:

Fibre Infinity 1 @ £22.99 inc. line rental (equals £4 after standard LR .. bigger saving if LRS taken out)
BT TV Entertainment Plus @ £5
    BT Sports @ £3.50

So £31.49 per month total. I was happy with that.

So BT's offer is £256 over the year (LRS and £4 a month), or Plusnet's offer of £214 over the year (LRS, £8.50 a month and taking cashback into account). Still unsure!

..only thing I would say is that cashback isn't guaranteed - I speak from bitter experience having had bad experiences with utility company switches:(

It's now obvious that the best deals come out when you intend to move providers just before the end of your contract or after it has ended.

Standard practice across pretty much all ISPs. Same with Sky/Virgin for TV etc.

They've had enough of people playing the 'I'm leaving' card so now they just call your bluff. If you follow through you get an offer, if you don't and stay they've just made some more money out of you.

I had no idea until yesterday.

BT retentions has just tried calling me, again. I'll call them back later and find out what they want.
  • Spoke to retentions and they weren't sure (again) why I was called today. They offered me the same deal and said it'll be there for me if I change my mind before the transfer day.

Hmmm, having some second thoughts here...

BT rang me again today to see if I wanted to stay. Plusnet's offer is cheaper taking cashback into account (£299 - £85 = £214) but BT is cheaper (£256) when you compare the deals without cashback.

Another thought I had is that BT raised their prices in January and Plusnet raised theirs earlier this month, so I would've thought there would be a greater chance of BT raising theirs mid contract compared to Plusnet.

Thanks. I noticed this last night. Strangely, it doesn't mention an increase of BB prices. But I wouldn't be surprised if BT upped those soon.

Edit: Sorry, just noticed at the bottom of the article that some of their broadband packages will also be increasing. If I signed up to BT now, would I be protected from the price rises?

Check the terms of the deal but if you pay for line rental in advance then you miss any increase there for 12 months. The deal will say if the broadband price is fixed for however many months.
As it is your deal, we can only guess what the terms are.

I rang BT back today just to check if the deal I was offered was still available. Turns out the deal I was offered is no longer there, despite me being told it would be. The new deal is £23.99 over 18 months - the guy in retentions checked all the deals and 12 month deals are no longer available. Still going to PN :)
