Renege after agreeing work with tradesmen?

Basically I had 4 plasterers come and quote for a job over the course of a week. 2 provided quotes quickly around a similar figure. Then the last chap to quote hadn't responded after 4-5 days and the 1st plasterer never responded, so I went with the best rated of the 2. He had said £1250 (the other said £1200) and agreed for work to start on the 25th (today being the 11th).
Now I have just received the quote from the last plasterer to visit, it is £850. He has the best reviews and believes the job can be done differently to the others that quoted.
It is popcorn artex, with no asbestos (I've had the checks done), but not a bad case of it.
The more expensive quotes are for a base bonding coat, then skimming. The cheaper quote is to scrape the artex, then 1-2 coats of PVA, then 2 coats finishing plaster.
£400 is a significant sum of money, so should I cancel the job or go back to him and ask if he can do it for less? I don't want to be a !!!!, but for £400... :-/

How about asking the person you've booked in to do the same job and see if that affects price? Then make a decision, rather than dumping them straight away.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Just get a plastering team in that will guarantee a mirror smooth finish and ensure the existing surface will not grin through the new finish and the new finish being crack resistant for 10 years.
its possible to get plastering work done to good standards,i pay my plaster inc labourer £400 per 10 hour day + materials a lot of cash=a good finish.
good finishing brings in more work !0
