I loved my security job when in uni. Caught up on some great films and also wrote a dissertation. Hated it when they asked me to do the day shiftAn answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......0

Indeed, a family member did security for a few years and spent a fair amount of time doing stuff like that in between work. Seemed like a cushy gig to be honest, if not absolutely mind-numbingly boring.0 -

It would have been terrible had it not been for the perks. One summer I did 70 hour weeks, couple of hours work per night then repeats of top gear on the laptop. Paid for uniAn answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......0 -

I can imagine! Very similar story with my family member, and I suspect also similar with OP here. Long hours, but scope to be left to your own devices (in a figurative and literal sense).
But then again I see the employer's side in that they ultimately don't pay you to watch top gear on the laptop, or do your dissertations etc (one of my previous employers paid me to do that sort of stuff, but have recently clamped down). OR effectively do 1/4 of the workload, as in OP's case.
If push came to shove (like in OP's case), I'd personally give up the "perks" of these types of jobs and continue to bring in the coin, but would also be actively seeking alternative employment. Not because I want to watch top gear during work, but because ultimately security and similar jobs are dead end jobs of the highest caliber (no offense OP).
OP is just in the ether at the moment whereby their bubble has probably been burst but they didn't have a coping mechanism in place to deal with that possibility. I'd genuinely hope that this would act as a kick up the backside to explore alternative lines of work, some which may actually compliment a grafter who effectively can do graveyard shifts to earn a living (people like that sometimes have more about them than white-collared kids).0 -
Dear All
Thank you for your comments,
How shall I start? Anyway some comments are valued,
I just want to say some of the comment were like do the job properly, to those I want to say that Those days are gone now when you were going to work and sit whole time and come back, security job has massively changed now over the time, now there are more responcibilities added to it, in fact some security firms are hungry just to gain the contract they will accept any terms with the client and then expect the security staff to fulfil those terms.
What I disagree with is security job has massively changed in a sense that al most anything and everything they have added into it, on a site anything which other people are not doing it they make this part of security job, they have added admin work, facilities work, gritting the site, some cleaning the site, and lots of other tasks and list goes on and on, I disagree with this. OK in a nut shell why someone join a security firm is to be paid low wages and less responsibilities, so wage justify the responsibilities, but when it goes to opposite way then this is not fair. In my situations it has gone opposite way that more responsibilities but less pay. Just to add for some of you who does not know, I mainly work nights 12 hours shift and there is no night allowance its just a flat rate and just some pence above the minimum wage.
The ones of you who think that security is all about watching the top gear or movies are to watch on site now a days is not possible because they have installed cctv cameras where you are based, or even if there is no camera you just get no time for these things because they keep you that busy that you just don't get time.0 -
Whatever job you are in, you are paid a wage to do the job. Simply, and possibly harshly, put if you don't like it find another job. You aren't the first person to basically say you aren't being paid enough for the job you are expected to do, and you won't be the last. It's the way of the world now.0

I think you'll find Miance that what you've written doesn't just apply to security. We live in competitive times, with high market uncertainty. Tender processes have evolved, it's not just price but quality and added value (still mostly price though!).
Pretty much every role in my sites (IT manager) is being asked to do more with less.
If you don't like it then sadly its very much a case of vote with your feet - find a new job with better terms, or start your own company and find how competitive it is.0 -
