Very easy to fit, often supplied with sticky pads although I always prefer to use screws.

Many are now supplied with 10 yr batteries.

    Heres some on ebay

This gadget is also known as a "Smoke Detector" if you need to look it up. The beeping they make sometimes ie when the battery is running low etc, is very annoying....I hope you get it fixed soon, and a proper working one installed instead!

It doesn't look like a "normal" smoke detector to me it has something to the side of it.
Why do you think its mains powered because you earlier stated you changed the battery?

Are you in Scotland? Is this a rental property?

That looks like the battery compartment open. Many mains powered units have battery back up.

You need to contact the LL. I had to when my mains fire alarm stopped working. They replaced it. Obviously if it had been a simple 'stick on' battery one I'd have replaced it but with a mains fire alarm I wouldn't know what to get.
  • Get the landlord to replace it if there is any possibility of making a mistake. It affects yours and their insurance.

This is quite literally a matter of life and death. Get your landlord to fix this urgently.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
