Confusing RAC Breakdown Basic Cover Prices

I have had RAC Breakdown Cover since 2001 and never really questioned the annual subscription before but reading an article in this month's Which magazine I knew I was paying more for my basic cover policy than the £39 per annum the magazine quoted. When I checked Money Saving Expert's own article on breakdown cover it confirmed the £39 per annum charge for a basic policy. I checked my bank statement for the last direct debit I made to RAC (September 2017) and it was £75.98 - so why the extra charge? To confuse things even further the RAC website states that to sign up for basic cover costs £60.97 - yet another different figure. Before I try contacting RAC I just wondered what others on here were paying them for the basic roadside breakdown cover.

Because they can. You can get top level cover for that amount, & get change. There's a page on this website all about it, worth reading.

Fubar - once you have sorted out your breakdown cover, take a look at your house insurance.

    And car insurance.

    Boiler cover? And many others.

If you simply renew year after year based on the renewal quote you get annually, you'll be over-paying, though in return you'll be saving yourself the hassle of shopping around or haggling.

    It's commonplace.
