As pointed out the point of the original note was to be helpful and moneysaving which was what this site used to be about before the moaners took over

Of course you shouldn't buy a new car just to get the compressor and yes it will cost you a little bit of petrol to recharge your car battery so its not totally free but what is? and compared to £1 a go its pretty damn close. I also dislike the goo - would much rather have a proper spare and rotate my tyres like I used to

This compressor has sat unused in my car for 4 years and a quick survey of friends reveal 6 with similar kit - only 1 of whom realised it could be used without the goo and one pointed out that he would use it just to check that it worked in case he ever needed the goo.

    edit
and yes the goo is an emergency only and will probably make your tyre unrepairable - as I said I would prefer a proper spare

And whats the duty cycle of your emergency compressor? Whats its expected lifespan if used weekly to check your tyres?

I have a foot pump, so I can do my tyres without having to drive the car anywhere.

I get a mini step-aerobics workout whilst doing it.

The pump wasn't free to buy, but it's free to use.

Dont use it weekly to check your tyres.

    Use one of these....

And FWIW i've had one of those RING compressors for years and its still going strong.

Occasionally Lidl or Aldi sell a double barrel footpump for £5.99. Even the decent RAC one can be bought from EuroCarParts for £7-8 when they have a larger discount code on offer.

It's an essential for every motorist. A pump at a garage is no use if you have a flat and plan to drive to the garage to pump it up!

I bought a mains powered 24 litre compressor from Machine Mart when they were on sale for about £90 five years ago. As we tow a caravan its more than paid for itself just inflating the tyres for when we're towing.

Yup - me too - have had mine 20+ years. Not even much of a workout, generally it's just checking with maybe a few pumps if a little low. Occasionally "pay for air" at a garage just to make sure the footpump is still reading correctly.

Get yourself a tyre pressure gauge then. Once you’ve driven to the garage you’re not checking them cold.

Understand your point if you've done 100 miles on the motorway, but does half a mile (distance home to garage I usually use) really make a difference?

Only in the minds of the kind of people who pay to have their tyres pumped up with nitrogen.
