Thanks for the replies at least I know I am not alone. I do usually buy the squeezy bottle, but it is more expensive than the tin.
If I need just a little bit in a recipe that can take colour and proportions needn't be exact (eg chocolate Krispy cakes, flapjack) I make a date syrup instead. Soak some dates in small quantity of hot water, pulp and then reduce to the required consistency.
As you can see I'm really concentrating quite hard on work this morning!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I can generally find it cheaply too. The best time to of the year is after pancake day.
