I do a bit of baking and that calls for golden syrup, but what a mess it makes. I have resorted to buying it in a squeezy plastic bottle, but that's expensive and I'm not keen on keep buying plastic packaging.
But it's hard to get it out of the tin, a faff having to heat up spoons, it slides down the sides of the tin and leaves black ring marks on the shelves in the cupboard.
Am I alone in this? I have thought about decanting it into an old used squeezy bottle that came with golden syrup in it, but the top won't come off. I may try to buy a cheap sauce bottle.
What do others do?

I use Morries own brand of golden syrup, which comes in a jar rather than a tin. If I need to melt it a bit, I bung it in the micro for a few seconds - being in a jar makes this do-able.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

You would have thought that Tate & Lyle might have come up with a cost-effective solution...but no, they stand to gain from the wasted syrup. Much as I hate to use plastic, on this occasion the squeeze bottle is much more practical.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I use a hot spoon to get the syrup from the tin, minimal mess. When the tin is nearly empty I put it on the gas ring for a minute to melt the syrup and pour it out.
The tin is always placed on kitchen roll before it goes back in the cupboard otherwise there's a big sticky ring!0 -
In the Winter or at the end of the tin I resort to standing the tin in a couple of inches of very hot water in the sink while I weigh out the rest of the ingredients.
LameWolf thanks for the heads up re Morries brand of GS, I pop into the one in the next town from time to time, will add GS to my list:D
Black treacle is the absolute messiest IMHO, the tin sits in a poly bag in the cupboard:(The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0 -
Funnily enough I was looking to buy syrup this week and passed it by as couldn't find the squeezy bottle
I'm the same for cooking honey, squeezy bottle for that as well. For both of them it means no need for making a mess measuring out, just squeeze and guesstimate.
Being old style is also saving on time needing to clean in my book0 -
I had the same problem so I bought the asda own golden syrup which comes in a squeeze bottle and the lid comes off so it can be refilled. To be honest though the syrup was really nice so not sure if I would bother buying the branded one anymore.0

Thanks for the replies at least I know I am not alone. I do usually buy the squeezy bottle, but it is more expensive than the tin.
I needed to get some when shopping this week, I had promised to make some fudge, I was in Aldi and they only had the tins. I haven't even opened it and it's sticky,
I will get one of the bottles from Asda, Then decant the tin into it.
I don't buy runny honey because that's too sticky, always buy set. I am surprised in this day and age Tate and Lyle haven't come up with something better. I remember the same problems in my cookery lessons at school, nearly 40 years ago.0 -
We were always told to dip the spoon in hot water first before dipping in. Just a little tip regarding messy bottles: I keep an old ice cream tub lined with kitchen towel in my larder for oils, syrup etc. catches drips and the taller sides prevent the bottles from falling over
(I've also decanted large bottles of oil into smaller dark glass bottles since I had one fall over onto the floor.... ;( )
