Cancelled DD but still paid

I bank with TSB. I have a CC with Santander. I'm in the process of looking to balance transfer it over to another provider. So, I decided to cancel the DD I have with Santander via my TSB account. All good.

Now, according to my Santander CC account online, another instalment of the DD has come off. But this is not showing on my TSB account and the DD remains cancelled. I'm clearly not complaining here, but just wondered if it is possible that it is a fortuitous glitch and am I ok to play dumb and reap the benefit?

They'll reconcile it shortly and apply late fees and interest.

Try to sort it out sooner rather than later.

Looks like Santander have asked for funds not knowing (yet) that you have cancelled the direct debit.
Make sure you make at least the minimum payment until the money/balance transfer has gone through.

agreed. i would always keep the minimum payment by DD, and if anything pay early/twice/more prior to/during a Balance Transfer.

How much time before the DD was due did you cancel?

    Are you saying...

You arranged with Santander for them to collect a monthly DD from your TSB bank account...

... and you have now cancelled that DD with TSB, without telling Santander.

If so, that was a bad idea. Santander will have requested the DD and credited your CC account 'on trust', assuming that the DD will be honoured.

The DD request will be returned unpaid in a day or two, and your CC account will be debited.

Plus Santander may charge you a failed payment fee of £12, and alarm bills may ring. ("Why have you cancelled our DD without telling us? Are you under financial stress?")

Now, according to my Santander CC account online, another instalment of the DD has come off.

DD's generally work on a 3 business day cycle. The initiating 'service user' sends a request for funds, three working days later this is processed by the receivers bank (and comes off your account), and then 3 working days after that it is registered as income on the initiators account.

What Santander are probably telling you is that they initiated a direct debit 3 days ago and are therefore assuming it was successful. They will find out on the third working day after the payment bounced that that's whats happened.

I don't think they can charge you if a DD fails because the instruction is cancelled.

Honestly this happens all the time, I'd just call them up and say that you accidentally cancelled the Direct Debit Instruction too early.

Update 11/06. Santander confirmed by phone that they have received the payment. TSB confirm in branch that it was last paid a month ago and DD canx by the user (me). Teller just grinned and said "I don't know what else to tell you". So, either it's magically been paid or not but I'm not in the wrong or out of pocket at all.

Santander have likely not had the rejection back for the DD so my guess is in a day or two theyll got notification that youve canceled the DD then their missed payment process will kick off and anything associated with that. If im reading your posts right, you should have canceled the DD after youd done the balance transfer.

I think Santander would be clearer if you were honest and told them you cancelled it before they applied for it as it wont be magically paid along the line somewhere as it wont wash if you come back to them saying they told you it was paid on an earlier call. I would call up and pay the minimum payment and tell them you cancelled the dd.

FWIW, almost the same thing happened to me with a Sainsbury's bank credit card DD.

I could see from my online banking that the DD had been declined due to 'No Mandate'. (i.e. Sainsbury's had failed to set up the DD before trying to collect it.)

But when I phoned Sainsbury's bank, they patronisingly told me the DD had definitely been paid - so I shouldn't worry.

Two days later I got a very stern phone call from Sainsbury's Bank telling me that the DD hadn't been paid, and they were charging me fees and interest, and asking me how I was going to pay the overdue amount.

(They removed the fees, interest etc when I explained that it wasn't my error.)
