Problems with dual MPAN and multiple providers
When I moved into the property, I was told by the letting agent that my energy would be provided by Spark, and so I registered an account with them and was paying monthy bills to them.
A few months into my tenancy, I received a bill through from Scottish Power. I have been in contact with them regarding this ever since, but each time I call I am told a different story by the representative on the phone. There seems to some confusing due to the fact that the property is apparently served by two MPAN numbers, one which is registered to Spark and the other to Scottish Power. However, there is only one meter in the property, which only provides two readings (a day and a night reading). I don't know which MPAN number this meter corresponds with, or if a second meter even exists.
Additionally, the estimated bill I have from Scottish Power is currently £1700 for around 8 months of electricity in a two bedroom apartment, which seems absurdly high. On top of that, if I was to enter the reading on the meter I am aware of, it would be almost 18000 kWh higher than the estimated figure, and would result in an unbelievably extortionate bill.
I have no idea what to do to resolve this situation, and was hoping someone could provide some advice?

Find out who your supplier is

Did you read the meter - both low and high registers, probably day rate and night rate - when you moved in?0 -
The bills should have both the MPAN and meter serial number on them.0

According to the two websites provided, Scottish Power is the provider.
We did take meter readings, and when we moved in the readings were at almost the same level as the estimated readings from Scottish Power are now. That said, the increase in the readings would still correspond to a bill of something in the region of £2000, but i know my energy usage hasn't been that high this year so the figure still seems incorrect.0 -
Does at least one of the MPAN's on the bill match the one on the meter?
Is the bill an E7 bill, and if so, does it show the correct usage for day/night - the readings not transposed?
Have you checked with the previous occupants or the landlord what sort of meter it is - some installations have a single meter but 2 MPAN?
Is the property all electric or does it have gas as well?0 -

In some dual MPAN set ups they are a meter.
One possibility is the property used to have 2 but the meter configuration was changed to only need one but the supplier didn't fully undertake all of the disconnection activities like changing the MTC from a related or non related one. This can cause problems.
I suggest you speak to either supplier and ask them to search your address on ECOES and see what it returns. That will confirm if there is 1 or 2 and also who the supplier is.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hi 8arrett
I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been having. We can certainly look into this for you here.
Its possible you should be on a tariff comfort plus white meter which requires two mpan numbers to support the heating and hot water system. Not a lot of suppliers support this system and it is possible that spark can only support one of the mpan numbers hence one with them and one still with us.
you can email me at Social@scottishpower.com with the following information-

your full address
your name and telephone number
and some details of the issues you have encountered
