Dog allergies

My Labrador has a serious itching problem or Canine Atopic Dermatitis mainly in his ears. This has been treated with Antibiotics, a steroid and a drug called Apoquel. This combination certainly temporarily worked, but unfortunately he developed non-cancerous lumps or hematoma around the same time, and my vet though this could be a side effect of the drug.

A new alternative is called Cytopoint which targets the itching reaction without affecting the immune system too much. Unfortunately, I would have to pay for this, and the cost would be £130 per injection per month (for as 39kg animal). He hasn't tried many antihistamines yet. Has anyone else tried this, or obtained success in other ways.

He has just had his ears cleaned out (which was traumatic even under sedation) to give him a better chance of treatments working.

Have you had a referral to a dermatology specialist?

No, I chose a different Vet as a second opinion, although they have sent samples off for analysis to see if it might be fungal, but both vets think an allergy is the most likely reason.
