Hi All
I am after some advise please
I want to set up a simple 2 or 3 page website for my mums company which she is starting. I have had a look at a couple of sites such as 123reg and 1and1 and am a bit confused.
All i want is to buy a domain name e.g. www.mycompanyname.co.uk, have a simple home page to startoff containing details of the company and then have an email address or 2 such as person@mycompanyname.co.uk.
Using 123reg as the example what do i actually need to purchase?
on their homepage they advertise
Free with every domain name
- Free Home Page
- Online Control Panel
- Full DNS Control
- Email Forwarding
- Web Forwarding
Does this mean that if i purchase a domain name for £2.59 that is all i need or do I need to buy web hosting and e mail addresses as well?
They have a web hosting starter package which allows 100mb of web space and 1500mb of data transfer. It also has 15 pop3 mail accounts for £1.85 a month.
They also then advertise email addresses for £0.83 per month. Does it mean I have to purchase these as well?
They currently have orange as the isp and get all the emails into outlook using pop3. If i were to use 123reg for example would they provide pop3 and smtp details to add to outlook to download the mails from them?
A lot of questions i know but all advice would be gratefully recieved.

Yeh if you want more than a single web page and want actual mail boxes rather than mail just being forwarded then you will have to purchase a hosting package as well as the domain. The starter package you mention will be fine. You will get 15 free mail boxes but then further ones will cost you 0.83 a month, of if you up the hosting package I imagine you get more/unlimited.
There are also many other hosting companies out there, some may be cheaper than 123reg and it doesn't stop you having the domain with 123-reg, as you would just point the domain to where ever your hosting is (your host would help you with the details for that) So have a look round and decide which hosting package is for you. Do you want scripting? databases? ftp (should all have that) etc.
And yes the mail boxes would be accessible through pop3 and the smtp server details are just whatever you use to send mail (usually your isp's i.e. orange)

Personally, i use netweaver.co.uk
With their home-hosting package, you get 1gb hosted space for a year and 10 email addresses. The domain name will cost you 7 quid for a .co.uk for the year and the hosting will be 35 quid... so that works out at a rather reasonable £42 a year.0 -
123-reg and 1&1 are what I use for purchasing domain names, so I definitely recommend them.
However, I would advise you not to rely on them for web/email hosting, as they are expensive for what they provide. Just stick to buying a domain name off them.
There are plenty of good value web hosts around - search MSE forums as lots of good ones have been recommended in the past.Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!0 -

123reg.co.uk is ok and fast for domain, remember .co.uk must be reg for 2years at a time +vat.
hostgator.com is good in usa for .com and hosting NO vat
hostchilli.com is very good [ have 600 domains with them]0 -
I use 123reg as well. However, as my needs are basic in the extreme, I "forward" my published URL to my free webspace with my ISP. I also "forward" my published e-mail address to my free ISP address as well. IIRC, this costs me 88p per month.
The main thing is that I now have the same published e-mail address (and in a format which looks good on the CV), and when I change ISPs to get the best deal, I just amend the forwarding details. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

I use Mr Site, and have never had any problems with them. I beieve it is around £35 a year if mememory serves me right for the hosting and email. They also have a very good instruction manual to help you set it up.
When I first got it, it was a bit basic but with the latest improvements, it is 10 times better.YES, I REALLY AM UGLY AND I DO PONG A LITTLE.0
