Apparently my salary is £166,153 and my tax will be £67,644 this year.

I think either:
a. Someone in the pay department typed in the wrong info.
b. I've had an unexpected promotion which I didn't know about!

Since a. is more likely, I think I'll be wandering across to HR/payroll in the morning, for a brief chat...

I would suggest you also ring HMRC up as well, to get them to correct the tax code!

However if it turns out you have been promoted, well done !1

    :-)

Not saying a £100k take home would be nice, but sadly unlikely.

You could check what HMRC think your income is in your personal tax account online.

    https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account
  • I have come across this three times in the last six months or so - all with the same scenario.

Employee leaves one job in the middle of a month.
Employee starts new job immediately and presents P45.
P45 details entered and first salary processed under RTI.
Somehow the P45 details AND first salary are regarded by HMRC software as normal monthly salary.
Employee receives huge K code with an astronomical salary estimate.

For example - guy leaves job in September with P45 showing salary to date of £24000 (six months)
He receives £2400 salary in new job (part of month)
His huge K code is received with underpayment in four figures and estimated salary of £316800!!

The true joy of a K code is that the max they can take in tax is 50% of your income

Well, I contacted payroll and they said it was up to me to sort it with HMRC.

I went onto the HMRC site again and there was an option to enter my actual salary.

I've done that and it gave a new estimate online; hopefully I'll receive a new notification of my tax code.

Did it not change your tax code straight away, when I changed my income split it did the tax code immediately.

Has that tax code actually been issued or have you just seen it in your online Personal Tax Account? The reason I ask is that I have a couple of minor tax issues which will sort themselves out eventually but each time I look at my online Personal Tax Account my tax code is different. However neither I, nor my pension payer have been notified by HMRC of those changes.

The problem if you have tax issues .... From another thread on here they are changing the tax code in you personal tax account every day but (fortunately?) only sending that to employers once a month.

So what code does your employer actually have? Maybe check in with them just before they do the payroll run!
