Mrs Optimist, I had root canal done by a private specialist at the beginning of the year, but once it was done he sealed it with a white filling, and sent me back to my own NHS dentist (after a review appointment a month later to check everything was fine) for the crown. I am in Scotland where I know things work differently but the crown was less than £100 - upper molar so not visible at all and done in metal - including impressions, temp crown, and final fitting.0

I had a root canal 2 or 3 years ago in a badly chipped tooth that had been nursed for 8 years with a large filling .My root canal work cost £1200 ! And tbh worth every penny , I saw a root canal specialist and the treatment was pain and stress free. I had it x rayed yesterday because I was experiencing similar pain and worried there was a problem . The x ray showed root canal perfect..it appears I've probably stressed my tooth out by biting down too hard/ probably in my sleep. I was told you should never have problems with a root canal , unless your hygiene was bad ?...I thought that if you have a tooth extracted you are more likely to lose the ones next to it ?Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0

Well, I had the root canal yesterday, cost me £645.
Specialist endontist said he took 4 roots out, all cleaned, disinfected and refilled, then a temp filling put in
Today, the tooth is ABSOLUTELY killing me (the pain woke me up in the night also), dosed up on ibuprofen to take the edge off, and the tooth is that painful that even when eating on the other side, if a crumb gets trapped on the tooth and I bite down, it's like an electric shock to the system.
I knew it would be tender for a few days, but didn't expect it to be as painful as it is right now.
I just hope it settles down fast, and was worth it.
Toothsmith? If you are about, is the pain normal? Thanks.0 -
Some pain after each stage of a root filling isn't unusual. The dentist doing it should have given you some warnings of what to expect afterwards? I usually tell my patients that whilst I hope it will be fine, it would be useful to have the paracetamol/ibuprofen handy over the next couple of days.
If you feel it's not settling then it would be best to ring up the dentist for his advice. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Thanks, Toothsmith.
I am going back to the ondontist this afternoon, as I feel something is not right. The pain is far higher than I expected, so much so that last night as the ibuprofen was wearing off my immediate thought was to find an emegency dentist today to have it extracted, as the pain was making my eyes water, and knocking me sick, and was again this morning when I woke up.0
