I came across this website which allows you to access your home computer remotely. There is a program which you have to download onto your home computer and then you are ready to go. Only works with the usual platforms, Internet Explorer, Windows etc, not Mozilla/Opera or whatever. May be worth checking out, they have a free version and it has won awards and stuff.

I saw it on the bbc clickonline programme so surely it should be ok. It was highly recommended.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0

Its ok, it just makes it very easy for the young hacker to gain access.
If you have a firewall or router I'd suggest monitoring the port used to remote access to see if the only person doing so is yourself.0 -
I'd like to do this but am also worried by the security implications
my Netgear router seems to block me from using windows xp remote assistance feature
not sure how to unblock it

Hi,
I use all different kinds of remote access. I use remote desktop which is free to any XP machine, but you normally need a Static IP address. I also use Logmein which I fine very good and IP address are not an issue. Its stable and quick.
Can Anyone suggest any free or cheap programs for remote help. I need to be able to train people over the internet for short periods. I need them to be able to see my desktop and also for me to take control of theres. I really like Netviewer but at £39 a month its a little over budget. You also have 2 sign up to a 2 year contract
Any ideas?

Hi,
I use Netgear Dt834Gt routers without changing any settings for most of my home workers. What ever method I use I tend not to have any issues. However if you have Windows XP Firewall enabled I get all sorts of problems.
I have never tried remote assistance, but it may be worth a try

If your training sessions are with only one client at a time use https://www.crossloop.com

Well it's either open a new thread or update an old one...
The above mentioned Netviewer http://www.netviewer.com is now free for personal use. I just tried it when a colleague elsewhere urgently needed to show me his PC desktop.
What's good is, the other participant install, although requiring them to run a tiny exe file, is extremely simple and painless. Is possible to invite the other party, even they are very non-techie, to share their desktop, the instructions can even be given over the phone. It uses Netviewer Meet's servers to get around any firewalls. 3 computers can be in a session.
This is the first time I've encountered a free program that looks as though it could be used to support grandma's machine on-the-fly even if she has nothing installed for desktop sharing as yet.
Just be very sure if dictating the web address over the phone, that the other party avoids landing on a phishing site where they could install fake software (ideally send special link by email or instant chat first).0
