The best route is personal recommendations from someone you know who have had the same scale of job done by the tradesman, and ideally who have used the tradesman for a number of years and for different jobs.

Failing that, the next best option is personal recommendations from lots of people you don't know. If the tradesman has loads of glowing reviews on a reputable review site, they are probably ok. Not always, but probably.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

As above. Recommendation. Proven quality of work.

It works both ways too. If you're recommended by a good client of the tradesperson, they're more likely to want to deal with you as well.

Agree with all the above. I would also check out local Google reviews and reputation. A well respected small company is best for most jobs, in my opinion.

Many review sites have been manipulated beyond belief and some of the reviews are obviously fake.
