Gas Meter end of life

I change my energy supplier regularly to get the cheapest tariff
and each supplier has offered to change my meter to a smart meter.
Which I have refused, this week I have had 2 letters from the National Grid,
saying that my meter has come to the end of its life.
That they are coming on such a date to change it.
Is this a ploy to get me to change my meter, or is this ligit?

A meter is a meter - its job is to record consumption.

Your new meter will certainly be a digital one but it does not have to communicate readings back to your supplier.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

The meter may need replacement depending on its certification period, so check this and contact your supplier to cancel the non-agreed and therefore unacceptable appointment from National Grid.

If the meter does need to be replaced, ask the supplier to make an AGREED appointment to change the meter to a new meter that is NOT a smart meter, with confirmation in writing of the date/time and the meter type.

Ofgem state: smart meters ... aren’t compulsory and you can choose not to have one.

What they said! Make sure you get the close reading on the old meter & the start reading from the new meter (it may not be zero). I confess to not being either a trusting or even a nice person so I locked the door so they couldn't leave without giving them to me. And just to be clear - they heard & saw me unlock it to let them in & saw me lock it after their entry.

Unfortunately once a meter has reached a certain age they can claim that it needs replacing. After my last experience of my gas meter change I will be asking for some personalised guarantees in writing. I am not risking my son's life again.

If you refused National Grid's request to allow them to change a meter that is has come to the end of its life, and subsequently you encountered a catastrophe, would you sue National Grid for the damage caused to your property or to people? Would an insurer payout in the circumstances?

I would suggest that National Grid, as the energy transporter and not the energy supplier, is probably doing absolutely the right thing.

National Grid will not be fitting a smart meter, only suppliers will be fitting them. They will simply change your old imperial gas meter for a standard metric meter.
Please be aware that National Grid are not beyond gaining a warrant of access if you continually refuse them to change their meter ..

National Grid are one of the over 200 bodies who have a right of access to your property without your permission.
Your house insurance will not cover you from now if your old imperial meter develops a leak which damages the property.

It wont be smart and it wont be digital. It will be a standard metric meter. There is a good chance that it will also be refurbished and not shown zero because meter manufs are no longer producing U6 on smart meters simply because no one wants them in significant numbers due to smart metering . They simply recycle existing ones, repair/recon/respray/test ,,send them out again.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

If they're refitting end of life meters with secondhand meters - what is the point?

Are we talking about National Grid (Now Cadent I believe) or National Grid Metering Limited? The latter provides metering services to energy suppliers.

If it was me, I would be chatting to my supplier. Make it clear that you are happy to have a non smart meter and see what they say.
