Apparently, there's a non-insurance evident data recorder fitted to my car.

If I remember correctly, acouple of years ago, evidence from one taken from a similar car after a fatal crash was used to convict the driver.

But not in a British court.

    I think it was Oxford.

Edit: It was Oxford Crown Court. Car ploughed into the back of stationary traffic on the M40.

Was the driver a female with dyed blonde hair?

55 year old bloke. The data revealed that he had only started to brake 0.5 seconds before impact.

Fair enough, but the link you supplied was about the USA.

I've seen cars with stickers to the effect of "I hate having a black box as well but I have to stick to the limit" in fewer words

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

A great example of why they're needed.

My son's got a black box in his car and having driven it, the amount of intimidation you get from other road users for sticking to the limits is unbelievable.

Most roads including motorways and dual carriageways are fine, it's the roads with a 30 limit where 'everybody does 40' where the tailgating and gesturing start.

I can see why you might want a sticker saying 'sorry, it's not my fault' but my son says he just ignores them and rightly so.

Mine too - quoted from the handbook. Strange, random exclamations and numbers not in the original text. I don't use a fruity product either.

    "!!!61548; Event data recorder
This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The main purpose
of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations,
such as an air bag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist
in understanding how a vehicle!!!8217;s systems performed. The EDR is designed
to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short
period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as:
    !!!8226; How various systems in your vehicle were operating;
!!!8226; How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake
    pedal; and,
!!!8226; How fast the vehicle was travelling."
