Can I find out who a bank account belongs to?

I've just discovered that the company I was paying an annual standing order to for storing my will went into administration back in 2012. I was not notified at that time and continued to pay the standing order. I have the bank account details of where the money is going and I would like to find out who has been receiving my money for the last five years.

It isn't a great deal of money but I would like to know if I could get it back or just put it down to a bad experience.

Do you know where your will is?

If you don't then I suggest you make another as a matter of urgency, and then think about where the standing order money has gone. :)

You can check the sort code of the bank below, enter the six digit code. It will tell you from your payment details on your bank account summary/statement or even your payment authorisation online.

I had similar with my house deeds when The Woolwich closed, turns out Barclays took over the deeds store and I paid them. I now know they are safe in storage and no payments required.

You need the original signed and witnessed will to obtain probate, so having a copy of it when you don't know the whereabouts of the original is useless. :)

Nope - only after a grant of probate will have public copies of wills - anybody can ask for a copy - for a fee.

A bank will not advise you of a name of an account holder due to data protection.
As you paid a ''named'' company can you not Google to see who dealt with the winding up of the company to see who you were paying?

Thanks for all the advice, now on the case. The will needed to be changed, that's when the issue was discovered.

To avoid future complication, may I recommend Certainty?
Not least as it saves this sort of anxiety time future & makes it a bit harder for anyone to give you deathbed hassle.
It also saves you the fuss of wondering where to store the will & what if X co goes bump. If you do change your Will, you would be well advised to tell Certainty, lest they find themselves holding an older version - which might trigger a load of avoidable contentious litigation.
    Best of luck!
