OK Google - how does it work?

How does my phone monitor for the 'ok google' phrase so that it knows when to switch on when it hears it, yet does not monitor everything?

Whenever I do a search for this on google I get conspiracy webpages... cant find anything solid that would help me decide whether or not to turn this (really convenient) feature off

I can't see how it can do anything other than monitor everything - if it didn't it would never know that you'd said OK Google (it's turned off on mine, and I've never yet used it).

It just disregards anything it hears that isnt "ok google" *

Yep, Siri and Alexa all work that way too, always listening for the trigger phrase then they start recording what's been said and send that back to the main computers for analysis (the phone's CPU is not powerful enough to do speech conversion quickly enough)

I don't doubt NSA/Mossad/PLA/... can remotely enable phones to be covert listening devices whether or not you've enabled Siri etc. but are you are a subject of interest to state security agencies?
