Replacing a Stained Glass Window

Options
I have a stained glass window (approx 5ftx3ft) in my house that is in serious need of replacement as the glass is bowed and the wooden frame is warped and rotting.

I would like to get the existing stained glass re-framed either in a new wooden frame or UPVC, but does anyone know how much this might cost?

Thanks

I have no idea of cost but your local glaziers shop will be able to help you.

My mum and dad had this done at one of their old houses. It was a lovely front door panel but when they had double glazing fitted they didnt want to lose it, so the glazing firm just used that as one of the panels.

    Sorry couldnt be more help

  • It sounds to me that it is a replacement window frame that you require- not replacement glass.

I'd suggest that you approach some local joinery firms- take a look in Yellow pages. You'll need to supply the precise dimensions of the glass (best to make a cardboard template). If you're capable of a bit of DIY (fitting the window yourself) a specialist window will probably only cost you a few hundred pounds. Otherwise you'll have to pay a carpenter to remove the old window and install the new one- a days work- expect to pay about £150 (more if you're in London).

When we had new upvc double glazing our stained glass was removed and taken by the DG firm to someone who repairs and refurbishes stained glass. We had temporary glazing for about 2 weeks then a new double glazed unit with the original stained glass encapsulated between two plain panes was installed. Big window on the side of our house cost about £1000 8 years ago. Two smaller side windows cost £650 last year.

Any reputable Double Glazing firm will be able to sort you out. Ask to see other houses they have done.
