Older cars will be closer to 40mpg .... £1/gallon if you're driving 20 miles each way to and from work is £1/day extra. It all adds up, especially if you took a job, say, 40 miles from home as you lost the last one and this was the job you got soonest and you have bills to pay and this job pays 75% what the last one did - that's an extra £2/day, or £45/month.

indeed, but it's not in to the realms of may as well give up your job or the country grinding to a stop, and that's with a massive increase in petrol prices, you're talking increases that will need to see £1.50+ per litre to add £1 to the commute you mention.

in 2011 - 2014 we had prices hovering around £1.25 - £1.30 a litre after years of hovering around £1 - £1.10 a litre and there wasn't mass hysteria with people throwing their jobs in and the country grinding to a stop.

i'm of the view of meh, even with massive increases the added cost for most people will be next to nothing on a per mile basis.

Most of us could recoup that increase, by just being a little bit more gentle with our right foot!!!

I shall now put into action "Little old lady on a Sunday drive" plan!! Watch that average MPG climb!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Most of us can save far more on depreciation than on fuel, by keeping a car longer.

Gone from 118.9 to 130.9 for regular diesel around here in just over 2 weeks. That's a 10% increase in fuel costs for everything from commuting to shopping which, when you live in the back of nowhere, soon adds up!

Thankfully the oil price has backed off over the last week, it'll just take time to filter back down to the pumps...

I've a modded Cooper S and if i drive [STRIKE]like a psycho[/STRIKE] enthusiastically i average around 29mpg, drive sensibly on cruise control and i average around 36mpg. Considerable difference..... :o

I paid 134.9p per litre for BP ultimate super unleaded at the weekend. Definitely has went up in price. :(
wouldnt bother with bp ultimate, theres a reason most engine tuners only recommend tesco 99 and shell vpower.

just filled up @ 143.9 with V-P. Annoying

I only use it to get the 97RON fuel. Not hugely bothered about the "Ultimate" aspect of it.

Over here in NI we dont get Tesco 99 at all, and very few places do super unleaded. :(

And we dont have SHELL stations over here either.

Our 370Z GT required 98RON and we had to use Octane boosters as only 97RON avail here in NI (or lose a bit of power)

I have a fuel escalator built into my contracts, my rates are currently 3% more than they were back in January.

Most hauliers and certainly the big outfits that pull supermarket/big retailers trailers will have an escalator built into their contract. It will find its way onto the shopfloor at some point.
