...where it's becomes less favourable is if you want to sell properties and get the proceeds out of your company....

...you've said you enjoy property management. but are your kids showing an interest in property management, at ages 1 and less than 0? :)

I've no plans to ever sell the properties, they will be the safety net for the kids that I never had. When I retire they will be hopefully keen to get involved, perhaps I'm hoping they follow my example of what hard work can achieve. Probably a little early to say for sure :rotfl:

They can just sell them if they want :)

Don't go for the lowest risk fund choices when you still have a long way to go to retirement. Be more aggressive in your choices and be prepared to ride out any storms (like 2008). Also, pay more attention to investment choices. Don't go "I don't understand them, it's too complicated, I don't have time to read up on the subject because I am so busy at work so let's just go low risk".

Fortunately I was able to make big contributions in later years and take advantage of tax relief to really bulk up my DC pot. But if my core holdings had been better invested even 10 years ago, I would be in a much better financial position than I am now.

Fantastic, thank you. I'm always interested to hear opinions of people that have been through what I'm wanting to do.

The wife and I have a property we rent out, although there's no mortgage on it. I bought it for about £150,000 and it's value had dropped when we moved house (to about £130k), so we decided to keep it and rent it out. It's now worth around £180k. I toy with the idea of selling it and investing the cash but it's been fairly hassle free for the last 5 years and the yield is good. I also see it as a hedge against house prices going skywards again, as I plan to sell it down the line and give some of the proceeds to the kids. On the downside though it's definitely a PITA at times when things break and need fixing.

We do also save a fair chunk each month into our pensions so it's part of the bigger picture for us. I definitely wouldnt go all in on BTL although I know people who have done.

The good thing about shares is that someone else is doing all the work for you.

And if you buy shares in the right geographic region, eg Henderson Far Eastern Income then they're working while you're sleeping:j
