Contents/Buildings Claim or Tough Luck ??

I have recently had a substance repair job done on my house.
When the contracters arrived they enabled all floor areas with protective floor covering, firstly from the main entrance doors with what only can be described as heavy duty cling film which went down the centre of the main hallways, up the stairs and onto the upstairs hallway.
As each area was worked on another heavy duty green polythene covering was put down. and then taken up when each room was completed.
I had agreed to undertake all decorating myself once they had finished and left and the cling film like covering was left down to protect while the ceilings etc in the hallways were being done, re artexed and emulsioned etc.
I have just completed all decorating of the hall stairs and landing and have taken this cling film like covering up today with great difficulty in some areas, it had stuck like glue.
When I got to the last stretch at the bottom of the stairs and hallway it has lifted easily as all the glue/sticky backing has attached itself to the carpet
Who do I approach about this problem
The contracters who supplied it
My insurance company as an ongoing problem with the substance claim
My insurance as part of my contents policy
Or alternatively if this is not a claim what could I use to try and get this glue/sticky substance off the carpet without damaging it any further
Any help or comments would be gratefully received
