Have a friend who has the above but he has forgotten his password to get on the phone what is the best way to get without losing all stuff held on the phone eg photos and videos and contacts he does not wish to do a factory reset

If the Google Sync option was on then all the data should be in the Google account (I'm assuming this is an Android phone) so when you sign back into it after a reset the contacts at least should be there and any other data you backed up to it.

Is this a Sim card lock he's forgotten or the phone lock? The Sim Lock won't go if the phone is reset, but the phone lock will, but obviously along with everything else.
