Year abroad bank account recommendations

Options
My son will shortly be going on his 3rd year, year abroad in Spain. What is the best option in terms of banking to minimise charges and conversion costs etc bearing in mind I still need to support him financially whilst he is there? He banks with Santander in UK but they have said to him it makes no difference as they are totally separate entities from the Spanish bank. Any good advice would be welcomed!

We're doing something similar and just opened a Starling account.
We were also looking at Monzo.

This ^^^^^^^^^. It's that simple. Maybe a Revolut account as well. They are all free.
