Saga car insurance price difference??

I have many insurances with Saga. I have just swapped my old 2 litre Renault Scenic value £500 for a newer Honda Jazz 1.4. value £5000
Saga were charging me £400 comp for the Renault and now want £750 for the Honda.
However using MSE's guide I have gone on Moneysupermarket first and with the same excess and drivers etc they start with unknown companies at £149.
Admiral (which I may choose) is £189 BUT...Saga itself is £449, for the same vehicle and drivers and cover!?
How can this be possible?
TIA

Vigman, what you describe isn't that unusual. Being loyal doesn't necessarily pay these days on car insurance. Even though Saga specialises in older customers it doesn't mean they'll be the cheapest. Also they have their own in house insurance company so will pick and choose customers as they see fit0

I was with SAGA for my car in 2016 - renewal quote in 2017 was uncompetitive so moved to RIAS. Renewal quote with them was not competitive this year so moved again to.......SAGA, who quoted less than I'd paid in 2016!!:T
It's a merry go round - just looking for house insurance quotes -I think they make some of the prices up:rotfl:0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I knew about differences between renewal prices and new prices but never imagined £449 against £750 for the same policy!
I have no driving fines, (not even a parking ticket!) and I have never claimed on any insurance and have boat, house and another car policy with Saga.
These will not be renewed.

Insurance isn't just based on you though. It's also based on statistics. It might be that one insurer has had loads of claims with that type of vehicle and people your age for example, whereas another hasn't. A lot goes into pricing a policy not just you and your claims history such as....
Your age, your occupation, your vehicle, how long you've had the vehicle, your postcode, how many in your post code have had accidents in that engine size, how many people have had thefts of that car in your postcode, how many people have had accidents in that make and model car, how many people have had accidents at your age etc etc.0 -
Thanks FutureGirl. That still doesn't explain why the same policy as a renewal with Saga is £750 but only £449 when bought via a price comparison site from the same company?

You get new customer discounts when you take out new policies. You don't get a new customer discount when you renew.0

Saga insured me for 7 years for a Saab 9-3 turbo, 205BHP
Now changed to a 135BHP Peugeot 307cc, and they wouldn't insure it!0 -
Actually gone with Co-op. They come in top 6 insurers in most polls and also have the MSE advertised £50 vouchers and we use our local co-op all the time.
Cost £200 with courtesy car, legal, windscreen and £250 excess instead of Saga renewal at £752 or Saga via price comparison at £480!
