Negative balance on credit card

My dad has just passed away. He had a credit card which my mum was an additional card holder on, so as I understand the card will be stopped when she informs the credit card company of his death. They did not use the card that much and paid the balance by DD each month. He bought a couple of things before he died which were then returned and are awaiting a refund. What will happen to the balance on the card when she informs the credit card company of his death? If it’s a negative amount would they refund it to the current account the payments were made from or will it have to go through probate as an asset? If the card is cancelled before refunds are processed will it be difficult to get a refund to an different card/account? - the only other card they have is a debit card for joint account. It seems like a silly thing to be worried about at this time but playing on our minds. Not sure whether to hold off informing credit card company till after the refunds have gone though or not.

It's always the little things that you focus on. If the refunds are imminent, just hold off telling the credit card company (your mum shouldn't use her card in the meantime). When the refunds have been safely received, just tell the card issuer and you should be able to get a refund (sounds like the amount is going to be fairly modest??) paid to the current account from which DD were made. You will probably need to provide a copy of the will.

When my father died they just changed the account into my mother's name, this was a few years ago though so they may be more rigid now.
