I'm no expert but I'm guessing this was a pretty sophisticated attack for the site to be down for so long.

Do you think it could have been some angry HPC fanatics who were upset about not being to able to discuss their favourite topic.

nah a dos attack is the eqivelent of ram raiding to go shop lifting(pure brute force approch), just need the code for an old virus to build a bot net and tell you zombies who to attack.

was odd not to have one of the forums i cycle through though, kind of missed it sniff.

So pleased to see this back up and running again - really missed it - advice, help and moral support on here and main site is invaluable :dance: Hope the idiots who messed things up for everyone else get their just desserts one way or another........

I think MSE need some new staff if a DDoS causes 3 days of downtime! This should have been blocked at the connectivity provider within hours.

Might want to give Pipex a call...

I hadn't realised that you weren't allowed to discuss HPC.

I don't think it is that uncommon, and have even seen a simple programme published online that would apparently do the job if you cut and pasted it.

I hope if you have as much knowledge as you make out, you offered your services to the Team that worked so hard over the weekend!!!

I know what a DDoS is, and it's very uncommon for them to take out a site for more than a few hours. A cluster I use was under attack last week, and it took an hour before it was blocked at the routers.
A site like MSE is also a prime target for DDoS attacks, and I'm surprised they weren't protected against it (I mentioned Pipex in my post for that reason).
