problems formatting SanDisk

Hi, on hols recently I ran out of photo space so purchased 1.0 GB Sandisk CF card for my Canon Powershot A70.

Because I bought the CF card from a market stall, I popped it into the camara straight away to check it was OK, it gave me something like 1024 photo space.

Later, I formatted the CF card, but since doing so, the photo space available has dropped to 139? This is half what my existing 256 MB card held?

Any ideas on how to get the space back?

Thank you

  • Could it be the resolution that you paln to store the pictures as?

My camera will store so many images at best quality but more at good

    Just a thought
  • You haven't changed the size of your photos to Large or Medium 1, have you?

Also check that you haven't accidentally recorded a video

If you haven't changed any image size/quality, first try and reformat the card with your camera, it'll show the empty capacity available, if it's not nearly 1Gb, or a lot less, it'll be a dodgy card, there are a lot of black market cards about.

    Thanks for the replies

I haven't changed the photo size, and when I now look at reformatting the CF card, it shows 'CF 123MB 8KB used'

I haven't used it, there is nothing stored on it, does this mean that the card is faulty?

    Thank you

It sounds like a fake card that has some data on it to make it appear like a 1GB to the camera initially but now that it has been formatted, the true memory capacity is showing.

take it back and get trading standards to deal with it. Its not labelled correctly and therefore is covered by the sale of goods act
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I would, however I puchased it in Hongkong, and although I would dearly love to go back, I simply can't afford to!
