Moved to house with CCTV and an alarm - no instructions?

Hi all

I have moved to a house which has CCTV and an alarm system fitted.
I cannot find any manuals for them and the estate agents previously said the seller would leave them.

To be honest I cannot see any internal hardware for the CCTV - I'm not even sure where the cables come into the house.

Does anyone have any advice on how I could potentially find out how to use these in the absence of the manuals and not knowing where the CCTV cables come into the house?

Many thanks

If you take a photo of the alarm system someone may be able to identify it for you and find a manual on the internet.

Also take photos of the CCTV cameras and anything you can see of the wires.

How do you view the CCTV? Is there a single TV that has access to it? OR is it only via a computer/mobile phone?
They might be IP Cameras in which case they only have a power connection, there would be no CCTV Server/box.

If there is a CCTV box you might get a clue to where it is located by turning off the trip switches one by one until it goes off, then you'll know which circuit it's connected to

Thanks - I have no idea how to view the CCTV. There is a glut of cables going to a TV point in the main bedroom: Ariel, HDMI, USB etc but I'm not sure which it might be. I don't even know how or from where they are powered.

I will take some pics if it's possible to add them to the thread.

Have you any contact details for the previous owners?

I presume you've got the entry code for the alarm? Google the name and model number and you should find the manuals online somewhere.

Plug the leads one by one into a TV and see if there's any output. Don't forget to try the Freeview option to check for a signal if that's what it is attached too.

Plug in a TV to the HDMI and see what happens.

You might even find that the previous owner has taken the CCTV server with them, so you get nothing. But you should be able to find the cables terminate somewhere.

If you haven't spotted them yet, then look under the stairs and in the loft.

But your solicitor must have. Was it a condition of sale or was there an inventory detailing the CCTV and alarm?

First step : Plug them all in to your TV and see what signals they are producing ..

Have you thought that you might be able to reject the house as unfit for purpose under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and get all your money back? ;)
