Need "stick" rechargeable vacuum cleaner

We have quite a tall thin house and find a small rechargeable stick vacuum cleaner very useful to keep handy near our kitchen diner. Trouble is we have had two now and both have lasted less than a year. The first one, a Phillips, we took into our local repair shop when it packed up after 10 months (with a 6 month guarantee). They could not fix it and found there were no spare parts available from Philips.
Still we thought we had been unlucky and bought a different model - a Hoover this time - from our local DIY store. That has just given up the ghost after 9 months, again with 6 month warranty.
Is there something inherently suspect in the design of stick vacuums? My sister tells me she had one - Vax I think - and that packed up as well in a matter of months. She took hers back to John Lewis and got a refund. So we are thinking of trying again with one from John Lewis which we can at least return when/if it fails.
Anyone have one of these cleaners which is either reliable, or from John Lewis, ideally both and we will give it one more try.

If I was in the market for one, I'd only be looking at the Dyson V- range. They're pricey, but the other manufacturers just don't come close on efficiency (i.e. battery life, suction and cleaning ability). One big thing missing however is the long warranty - Dyson have always offered five year warranties on the corded models, but only two years on the cordless models - probably because they don't want to guarantee the batteries will last that long (though Dyson did mention an expected 15 year battery life with the latest model which is certainly impressive). Dyson have actually stopped developing corded models with the release of the V10, so they must believe they have it nailed.
You can pick up refurbished models with a one year warranty from Dyson's ebay shop. I've seen reports they turn up good as new.0
