SLC overpayment

Options
Hi,

Problem with the student loans company.
My wifes loan was thought (and confirmed by SLC) to be paid off. She overpaid and refunded a large amount of money back to her. SLC were dreadful and didn't provide a proper statement including money paid off (replayments via inland revenue).
Now 3 odd years later they have realised the mistake and want the money INCLUDING THE INTEREST back!
While we accept the money must be paid surely we shouldn't be liable for the interest on the outstanding amount?

cheers!

John

  • I don't know where you stand legally, but you should certainly write them a letter and argue your point. The fact she overpaid shows you had no problem paying the money back at the time but write to them and tell them you are not prepared to pay them more money for something which was their mistake in the first place! Totally unreasonable!!
