From the Bronze Age and Iron Age through to the Romans and the Dark Ages, Northumberland has survived through battles, wars, and conflicts. As a result, its landscape is covered in the remains of historical defences, such as the hilltop forts of the Iron Age or Hadrian's Wall, the 73-mile northern frontier built by the Romans.

Colin Alexander, a Northumbrian-born teacher, tells the story of England’s border county, in his new book, Defensive Northumberland. We've managed to secure a copy to give away to one lucky Living North reader.
