Hi we have a ASUS N550 gaming laptop, been fine for years, 1st issue was fans running at full tilt from cold, stripped and cleaned no real dust found of sorts. This issue does seem to come and go, with days passing with normal fans. Now its also started taking ages to boot, just sits with black screen, with a faint flashing, then can take up to 20 mins to boot to windows.
I dont think is OS related as fan issues is present even in BIOS, tried changing disk back to original non SSD, still same so not disk.
Any logical suggestions as to what it may be ? my gut feeling is motherboard is failing.

Not good (obviously). Have you checked for any BIOS updates? (May even be worth a BIOS refresh, although not sure if you can upgrade a BIOS to the same version?)I dont think is OS related as fan issues is present even in BIOS
Confirm - with disk change it can still take 20 mins to boot? Have you checked disk SMART data? (HD Sentinel recommended.)tried changing disk back to original non SSD, still same so not disk.0 -
it seems to be waiting for something? boot order? Trying to boot from CD or PXE? Flat coin battery gone?
The fan thing, perhaps the heatsink compound has failed or dried?0 -
Heat issue?
When you took it apart did you repaste the processor with some new thermal paste? The majority of laptops use a copper pipe to draw heat away where another fan blows it out the chassis. If the paste has dried out the laptop will get too hot and most of them will slow the processor down dramatically to try and keep it cool.0 -
Have a look here, but read it thoroughly as there seem to be many answers

Thanks for all the replies, there is a bios update but been holding off on that as its been fine for years so struggling to see why the bios would cause it but i will do it.
I'm 100% its not heat as the fans can be on from first switch on cpu is running cool, other days fans are normal for ...well days on end.0 -
Isn't that normal, though? The BIOS loads before video and chipset drivers, so the fans spin at full speed until the OS and drivers have loaded.
I know the fans on my PC do this.
No it isn't normal. The only fan going full tilt on your PC before the OS and drivers have loaded should be the one on your graphics card. The CPU and chipset fan most certainly shouldn't be and especially on a laptop. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
