Electoral Role - Worry

Hi,

First time poster, please be kind as nervous.

Seems to be lots of good advice on here, I have tried looking for the answer i need but have not been successful.

Few years back managed to get myself into a bit of a financial mess. usual story, toxic relationship, probably depressed looking back and instead of facing my problems buried my head i the sand. ended up making things much harder than it should have been.

As such finance got away from me, could not face the payments stuck my head further in the sand.

Bailiffs at the door, lots of mail. I could not face it just kept running away from it

I am not proud of it, in fact very embarrassed and find it hard to talk about.

Fast forward 6/7 years personally i am in a much better place, as my credit has been so poor and not been able to obtain anything it has just started to improve (quite a lot).

I want to now remortgage (just to get a better rate as i have been on the same mortgage for 11 years)

I ran an experian credit report and it looks okay (good rating) and no CCJ's - I know the good means nothing as it comes down to the lenders. BUT it did highlight i am not on the electoral role. I am thinking i should be on this to help my remortgage.

My worry is, if i now go on the electoral role, despite being 6/7 years am i going to be chased for old debts? - I dont think i can handle it and would rather stay on my poor interest rate.

Any constructive advice would be welcome, please do not tell me how silly i have been (i know) as it has been hard enough asking for help at this point.

many thanks.

If you haven't acknowledged the debt in 6 years, it will be statue barred.

You won't get get credit from anywhere much other than Knuckles McGee down the local without being on the ER.

You are not silly, as you have learned from your mistakes. In fact, I congratulate you on beating the creditors by reaching the statute bar point without messing up and acknowledging the debt.

You can re-register for the electoral roll, with peace of mind that even if creditors try to hound you for any unacknowledged debt older than 6 years, you can mute them with a single phone call, to remind them that under the law, it is considered unenforceable.

They can't hurt you anymore - not on your credit file, not in court and not in your home :)
