I've had problems with missing mail over the years + getting mail meant for neighbours. Got neighbour's mail yesterday (again!!) but he's on holiday. I want to hand it to him in person. I called my local mailing office and the guy there wants the letter back. 'We have a duty of care', he said. I said I'd deliver it myself but write on it 'Hi Andy, this was mis-delivered to me on....etc'. The mailing office want me to photocopy the letter so that they can see what the letter is. Is this illegal?

Oh wow what on Earth is going on.

    1. Put it through his letter box, seriously. Or wait for him to come home.

    2. Why did you call the sorting office? What did you expect them to do?

    3. Just put it in his letter box. Why do you even need to write a note? Have you opened it?

    4. They probably want a photocopy so if they get in trouble for not delivering letter X they can say letter X was accidentally delivered to Jojocat and instead of just putting it in your letterbox they made a massively over the top fuss.

    5. Seriously just take it round and put it in the letter box as this is what would have happened if the postman hadn’t muddled up two of his hundreds of letters...

Why did you bother to phone the RM office if you are happy to hold onto the mail till they return from holiday? However I see no problem with giving them a copy of the envelope (not the letter)if it might help them to stop misdelivery.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

"I called my local mailing office"
How did you obtain the phone number?
I've not been able to do that for a long time now.

"Contacting your Local Delivery Office Unfortunately you can no longer visibly see any contact details for your local delivery office from the Royal Mail website. Instead there is an automated phone system, and you need to dial: 0845 6050767
This will ask you for your postcode, and will then tell you where your nearest delivery office is, and the opening hours. You won't however get a phone number for your local sorting office."

The OP says this isn't an infrequent occurrence. Here's some reasons why it's worth talking to the delivery office / NOT just stuffing it through the neighbour's letterbox:
    • DH used to receive, fairly regularly, two copies of a magazine he subscribes to. The other is intended for someone who lives a couple of streets away. By taking it back to the sorting office we seem to have reduced the number of times this happens. Just dropping it through the other person's letterbox wouldn't achieve that.
    • The name of our house is shared by a large business complex the other side of the city: they are written differently but sound the same. When we first moved in, we received something for them almost every day because if people are looking up the postcode, our house comes before the business complex. By returning these to the sorting office we have managed to reduce the number of items this happens with. (It's fairly obvious when it's not intended for us!)
    • Phoning the large business complex and asking the post room if they ever get our post didn't get us very far: they flatly denied ever receiving any, although they were aware of our existence ... although I think there is less going astray than there used to be. I don't believe we share the same sorting office so I'm not sure why that would be, unless they've just started tossing it back in the post if it's not for them.
    • Someone has recently moved into a flat across the road which has the same number as our house. So if our address is 'Dunroaming, 99 South Street' theirs is '99 South Flats, South Street', and our postcodes are different. We've had post and deliveries addressed to '99 South Street' with THEIR postcode. If it's a delivery abandoned in our porch, we've taken it to them. If it's a letter, back in the post it goes, unless I accidentally open it first. Well, it was from a well-known car and house insurance company, and I'd just renewed my house insurance with them. Bit worrying that the insurance company's postcode finder doesn't bring up the 'South Flats' part of the address!

So usually I'd be all for just putting it in the post, but sometimes it's worth doing a bit more.
Signature removed for peace of mind
