Someone else has insured my car?

So I bought a second hand audi a3 yesterday and the hpi is clear. The trader I bought it from says it is definitely never been insured to him but it is showing up as insured and I haven't insured it yet, any idea how I can find out who has insurance on it? Bugging me a bit because it seems a bit dodgy. Tia

Possibly the previous owner hasn't got round to notifying they no longer have the car.

    Nothing to worry about.

You need to either insure it or sorn it!

Maybe but it was bought from an auction? Its currently taxed but won't be insured for a week or so, can I not tax without insurance?

The tax gets canceled when the car changes hands. So if its showing taxed, but you haven't taxed it yourself then you're in fo a surprise.

Some policies cost money to cancel - and if the previous owner had time to run and there was no refund to come and they wanted a fee to cancel his insurance, he probably just "let it go". I did that once with home insurance when I moved out and tried to cancel, the cancellation fee was disproportionate to the value of the remaining insurance, so I just "left it".

    No.

If you have no insurance you must sorn it
  • In terms of tax DVLA website takes a while to update sometimes. The online check isn’t always up to date.

    The same for the MIB.

    I wouldn’t worry about it.

It gets cancelled when the DVLA gets notified that the car has changed hands, and processes that notification. If the seller is slow in posting off the form it will still show as taxed.
