Spanish banks and currency conversion

Hi. I now realise what happens with the chip and pin device when you are handed it. The screen shows 100 EUR (for example) and asks for the pin to be entered. When you do this, don't hand the terminal back, the screen will then change and ask a question about being charged in EUR or GBP. Press the EUR button. Normally after entering the pin, the assistant answers the question about the currency without asking. I have been caught out too many times being charged in pounds when I want euro.
I only discovered this as the receptionist at my hotel was distracted by another guest as she held me the terminal and I saw what happens on the screen after I had input my pin number. I do not think she was very happy that I had pressed EUR and completed the sale.0
