Composite doors! So expensive!

Options
Does anyone know if there's a way of getting composite doors cheaper?? We're looking at close to £3000 for two including fitting!

Ring around.... !! We got initial quotes of £3000-£3500, but found somebody who could do it for much much cheaper!

Where I work pays about £550 + VAT per door that!!!8217;s measured supplied and fitted in one of 5 colours, we do buy 1000 per year but still gives an indication of the profit some try to make on these.
  • That is after a few different quotes!! We were wondering if there was a seconds company or if anyone's bought second hand ones and how they've got on?

We had a top spec ("Ultimate") Rock Door fitted earlier this year, it was £1350 all in from a local independent firm. There were cheaper options available; lower spec Rock Doors & other brands but we wanted the best we could get because we live on a main road & the front door leads straight into the living room.

Not all composite doors are equal; some are more energy efficient/secure/sound proofing than others. Make sure you check out the spec of the door you are buying, you can keep the cost down by not getting more than you need. For instance, if we lived on a quiet cul de sac and had a hallway we would have gone for a cheaper model.

I don't think seconds are that common as they are always generally made to measure.

I'd suggest try buying the doors directly from a trade counter/wholesaler or manufacturer who's willing to deal directly with the public and then get a carpenter to fit them for you on a day rate. It should work out good value for money.

Unless there's a problem. The fitter will blame the door manufacturer and the manufacturer will blame the fitter and you'll be left with a slightly broken door forever.

Plus there will be no guarantee, and no back up with the job. So all round a risky route forward.

Composite doors are one big rip-off, we went for a wooden door, and even with the occasional maintenance needed it is stronger and more attractive and all for £400 including varnishing and fitting.

Or you do what I did.

    1. Go to wholesaleler. (choose design)

    2. Ask for recomended fitter details.

    3. Get fitter out to measure up and order. (Issues's are then their problem).

    4. Fitter fits and provides guarantee.

Payment was indeed split beetween wholesaler and fitter but just because wholesaler wanted it upon collection by fitter. This did not transfer blame in any way.
  • Ooh that might be an idea-were they happy to provide fitters recommendations?

We have a wooden door now and it sticks so badly in the winter!
