Unfair Over Limit Charge?

I have had an Amazon credit card (through Halifax) since the end of August, but havent received any statements so far. As a result, I got a call yesterday telling me my payment was overdue, and I was over my credit limit by £16. The late payment fee has been removed after protest, but the bank is still charging me £12 for being £16 over the limit. I argued that as I hadnt recevied any statements, I couldnt be expected to track every pound I spent. Should I be expected to pay the £12, and is this a reasonable charge given the small amount I am over the limit by?
I have over £14000 savings with Halifax. Could I use the threat of closing my accounts to get this fee removed?
Thanks a lot for any comments!

One thing I can comment on is that you should have had a direct debit set up for at least the minimum payment and you wouldn't be in this situation. They may remove the charge if it's a first and you ask nicely using the 'no statements' reason but as it is now at the industry 'recommended' figure of £12 they will probably not.0

Why not ? You've only yourself to blame for being charged and they have been reasonable by removing the late payment fee.
As the other poster has said, set up a DD and never get a late charge again, try looking at your statement on line, try ringing them if your statement hasn't arrived. You know you've spent the money and will know it has to be repaid.
The charge could easily have been avoided so put it down to experience and try not to let it happen again.0 -

I have cancelled my Amazon/Halifax Credit Card after only three months, I can't cope with their scary inefficiency. First, mysterious items appeared on my statement, which they removed. I've now been called at work asking me when I would clear my payments, which came as a surprise, because I hadn't received any statements (before anyone shouts at me I usually set up direct debits to pay off fully but hadn't seen the opportunity to do so). I paid up fully and cancelled my card. The two missing statements have since miraculously arrived but still containing charges with interest. It's too time consuming and frustrating.0

No doubt it suited you to keep quiet. You should have realised something was wrong when no statements were received. You could have easily set up a dd but no its easier to blame the bank. Take responsibility.0
