Thanks - that definitely gives me a context I can understand! As my shelf life will be another 20 years if I am lucky, maybe cat5e will do me. ;)

But then another way to look at it is that 100m of Cat 6 cable is only going to be £20 - £30 more than 100m of Cat 5e cable.

20 years is a long time and you may decide you want to do more with your network in the future than simply use it to stream video.

In have my whole house cat 6 networked

I have 2 points in each downstairs location and one each upstairs

I have a 24 way patch panel and have 10 spare ports
    I also bought a 24 Port network switch TL-SG1024D-03.jpg

My broadband is business Virgin BB and I get 380M download.

My son (and apprentice) has an X box and when his port goes through the network switch (separate box) the speed reduces from 380 to 140.
    He has a direct feed

I have a network test tool but it is only a basic one- I am a registered electrician but I do cat 6 ports on a rewire as an add on

The last house I rewired was an old sandstone one with thick 'wifi resistant' walls

I personally use a decent Linksys router (not the VM router as I have that on modem mode).

This means that I can have several access points (additional Linksys routers) that give me wifi points in other parts of the house.

The linksys is a bit dear but they are good- they also have the provision to set the wifi on and off in one hour block through the day as well as enhanced parental controls- this means that specific items can be given time restrictions whilst other stuff (such as your TV ) can have interrupted access
You can also set 3 items to have priority access (such as CCTV or TV), this is useful.
    baldly going on...

Thank you, lots of useful information.

Interestingly, I had my final person come this evening to give a quote (let's call him #4). He REALLY seems to know his stuff and can do the whole electrical job, Ethernet/WiFi and satellite. I'm really hoping his quote is affordable because I am pretty sure he will knock the socks of the others, expertise-wise (plus, he's very modest with it).

So far, for full rewire, with various extras (smoke alarms, burglar alarm, couple of extra external lights), octo LNB satellite with feeds to 6 locations, cat6 Ethernet cabling to all rooms (double ine ach room), I so far hahve the folliwng quotes>

Person #1 (electrics) and #2 (Ethernet and satellite) working together come to ca. £3.2k.

    Person #3 quoted £5.6k.

Will post the quote from Person #4 when I receive tomorrow or Wednesday.
