Can you make the budget planner spreadsheet work in the free open office software!

Hi,
I have the Microsoft Office (free!) alternative Open Office software installed on my desktop. I think this software is recommended in one of the articles here.
Anyway, the budget planner spreadsheet is written for Microsoft Excel (software that costs lots of dosh!). Would it be possible to make the budget planner spreadsheet compatible with the Open Office Calc spreadsheet software?
I appreciate there is an online version of the budget planner, but I think most people prefer to be able to use the spreadsheet version.
