Saga car insurance

Hi On behalf of a very mature and non - Internet - savvy friend...... she has SAGA car insurance. During the year she pranged her car and claimed for damage repair. SAGA sent her a renewal quote for £600, due 1 June.

She is rather tardy but today she at last sought advice from a local broker for a better quote.

When she got home there was a letter from SAGA to say that they have already taken the premium (from her bank account I assume as she swears she hasn't sent a cheque off to them).

The broker, by the way, said she couldn't do any better than the SAGA quote.
If that's correct it looks as though she's stuck with SAGA.

Putting that to one side, this 'automatic deduction' sounds unusual.
I haven't seen her paperwork so only have her word for what's gone on. I can only guess that somewhere along the line she signed a direct debit mandate. She says no. Any other ideas?

Thanks:)

Continuous payment via a debit card or credit card?

They take the premium each year until cancelled.

Thanks for replying. I'd just found a link about a continuous payment article and our right to cease such payments, had never heard of that before. It could well be that but she doesn't remember. Doesn't it show how vulnerable vulnerable people are? It seems such a simple thing to do, car insurance yet it's causing much angst! She says she will phone SAGA. I can't do much for her other than commiserate.

Any policy Ive taken out Ive either been told/been in the documentation it will auto renew, its been around for a number of years so nothing new.

Its down to the customer to A cancel the auto renew or B get a quote from elsewhere and inform the current insurers your cancelling the policy or got a cheaper quote from another insurer.

Thanks, she wouldn't have read the small print!
  • Don't insurers just love auto-renew. It should be by opt-in only rather like the new data-protection rules.

Don't tell them you're cancelling, inform them you won't be renewing.

I had an idiot on the phone try to cancel a policy (when I'd said I didn't wish to auto renew) It had 2 weeks left to run, and it was Saga. You've got to watch 'em.
