A few years back my boiler broke down. Told them I could smell gas and they were there within the hour. Turned out it needed a new thermocouple

British Gas engineers are not the same as the emergency engineers (local distributor, e.g. National Grid, Scotalnd Gas Networks).
Saying you smell gas will call out the latter who won't be able to fix your boiler, and may mean that they take longer to get to a real emergency.

Yep, Same on electricity as Swanjon points out for gas.

The local distributors are legally responsible for your safety. Servicing is not urgent however a smell of gas or an arcing electrcity meter means you have a potentially lethal situation so they come out straight away to make the supply safe. If you then need more doing, thats tends to go back to the local distributor to make an appointment with you.
