Replacement engine?

please excuse my limited knowledge...

Have a 60 plate Kia pro'ceed with 55,000 miles. 1.4 vr7 petrol

Something catastrophic happened to the engine, I don't know the exact fault. I wasn't driving, but on vehicles return, there is oil visible on the exterior of the engine, and found what looks like a 3cm piece of engine casing in the engine bay. Can not see where this has come from.

Vehicle is prob worth £2.5k(in working order)..... is a replacement engine a good solution?

what sort of cost should I expect for replacing an engine?

Without means to transport the car, do I need to find a garage who can recover the vehicle to check it over? I can get my breakdown cover to take to a garage i guess, but then I need to find a garage that I am confident about.

It is pouring with rain here now- was the car driven through floodwater?

Peugeots used to suck deep puddles straight into the engine, which would cause a connecting rod to come out of the side- sounds like what has happened to yours.

If it is floodwater related, then you could claim from your insurance if you have comprehensive cover.

You are probably looking at a bill of £1000+ for an independent garage to source and fit a second hand engine.

However, does the oil smell like cat wee? It is possible that the gearbox has broken, and that is where the piece of casing has come from; a replacement gearbox would be £500 ish.

You need to find the hole that matches that piece of casing, taking it to a garage for diagnosis is going to cost.

engine was damaged last weekend, no rain or puddles that day.

No warning lights, engine had oil topped up.

I am working on the assumption that we have been unlucky for the engine to have a failure at relative low mileage, so don't think insurance is going to pay out in this instance. Also 7 year Kia warranty expired 6 months ago.

Somewhere in between min and max levels. Car has been serviced as well within last 8 months, so oil will have been changed at that point.

    Timing belt snapped?

Either way, it sounds like you say a catastrophic unrecoverable failure.

The maths are simple on this one - if the cars worth £2,500 then a replacement engine at circa £1,000 all in seems better than selling it spares or repairs and getting just £500 for it.

Lets throw the dice and see what number we get,
There maybe a hundred things gone wrong, best to get breakdown company, AA/RAC to look at it and tell you what has broken.
We may not win by protesting, but if we don’t protest we will lose.
If we stand up to them, there is always a chance we will win.

Good. I only ask because I have known people who have filled the engine with oil so its at the very top of the dipstick. Said engine has then seen a conrod make a bid for freedom out of the side of the engine block.

If you have full dealer service history, once you know the issue, it may be worth your while getting in touch with them. Different company, but when I had a honda engine go pop outside of the warranty, they made a significant contribution to the cost.
