Loss of NCD

Hi, I'm looking for some advice here for my niece. She was visiting me recently and parked her car outside my house during the visit one of my neighbours reversed into her car. The car was parked at the curb, unoccupied and my neighbour admitted it was his fault. Now my niece has had her NCD reduced and she is having difficulty getting car insurance. She is 32 and has never had any convictions and no previous claims.

If she claimed on her own insurance then she will lose her no claims discount if it wasn't protected. Why did she not claim off the neighbour?

Her insurance will likely go up even if she doesn't lose her NCD as she's deemed more of a risk (she parks in areas with idiots who hit parked cars)

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Presumably this is because she claimed off her insurance rather than off the neighbour's

if so then her NCD will be reinstated when her insurer is reimbursed in full their costs by the third party insurer (takes months rather than weeks!)

If she wants to change insurer at renewal she should explain the situation to her chosen insurer.

If they will agree to reduce the premium if and when her NCD is reinstated then get them to confirm this in writing before buying the policy

She did claim off the neighbours insurance but went through her own insurance to do so. Whilst I understand that she has made a claim it should have been fully recoverable from the other company and therefore not affecting her NCD.

As advised, when her insurer is reimbursed then her "lost" NCD will be reinstated.

If she had to pay her excess, then she needs to get that reimbursed by the third party insurer along with any other uninsured losses

Next time she is involved in a claim where liability is clear cut with the third party she should consider either claiming direct from the third party insurer or using a claim management company rather than using her own insurance to avoid this issue
  • Thank you for that info. She was told that she wouldn't have to pay any excess. The not going through your own insurance was news to me and something I will follow myself if I ever need to.
