You don't need to buy a telephone (although my last one was £3 from Tesco - bought solely for troubleshooting my broadband), but you do need an active line that you are paying line rental on.

Unless you choose to go with Virgin, who have their own infrastructure so do not need ex-BT wires to deliver BB.

Pandabrit, you could use a checker such as
    https://availability.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

to find which suppliers you can choose from at your new address. All you need is the post code; you don't have to input a phone number. All the major suppliers of course have their own websites on which you can check for availability and prices. MSE has a pretty good BB comparison thingy as well. Just look under "Utilities".

HTH and I hope you will be happy in your new home.

Use a digital camera to take dated pictures of everything on the day you move in, just in case you end up in an argument about damage when you move out ( when you will take another set of dated photos). Check the landlor's inventory carefully and be prepared to nitpick.

Re: TV Licence, I've been living away from my mortgaged home (where my sister now lives) for 3 years in rented accommodation and have done what you are going to do...Netflix and on demand. For the first 2 years I filled in one declaration and didn't really have any issues.
Since I moved, about 10 months ago I've had nothing but aggravation. I've filled in 3 online declarations and made 3 calls saying the same thing on the phone. Despite that I've had inspectors turn up demanding to inspect my equipment. Tbh if they'd have asked nicely I'd probably have let them in to "inspect" even though they have no legal right to but because they've all turned up with attitude demanding to enter and in one instance even started to push my niece away from the door I've not let them in and given them all a piece of my mind. Yes, I've probably caused more problems for myself but I absolutely refuse to be pushed around by lying little ***holes. I would however recommend NOT doing what I've done and if you're happy just let them in to check if they do call. I'm just a gobby contrary mare that detests rude idiots like the ones they've sent to my place.

On the broadband thing, you might find that a phone/broadband contract is cheaper than a sole broadband one. Just don't plug a phone in. It's what I've done this time around. First house had Virgin broadband standalone but sadly this new duplex doesn't have Virgin cabled in so I went with BT for a phone/broadband package which is marginally cheaper than the Virgin. I just don't have a phone plugged into the socket. Simples. Again, you can check, I would suggest Uswitch and they will compare for you.

    Good luck with your move.
